Hopkins Wins Chess Match Over Winky!

Forty-two year olds aren’t supposed to belong in a boxing ring.  Father time has done a good job of slowing down long time pound for pound stalwart Bernard Hopkins, but for some reason, the clock still hasn’t caught up to the Philadelphia native.  Or at least the evidence would point that way after Hopkins (48-4-1) out pointed fellow technician Ronald “Winky” Wright (51-4-1), 35, in front of a near capacity crowd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center July 21.

Hopkins is clearly not the fighter he once was, but the former middleweight champ still has enough left in the tank to beat the game’s best.  Wright, of St. Petersburg, Florida, had not lost since dropping a controversial decision to Fernando Vargas in 1999, and the former 154-pound kingpin was coming off of a decisive victory over the tough Ike Quartey.  But Wright, fighting for the first time at the catch weight of 170 pounds, seemed lethargic with the extra bulk, and struggled to keep the stronger Hopkins off of him.
