Junior welterweights Kendall Holt and Ricardo Torres wanted to
prolong the Fourth of July holiday with a version of their own
fireworks. Only it was their fists that rained down on each other in this
memorable rematch.
Holt miraculously survived being knocked down twice by Torres, then scored an amazing knockout in just over one minute of action at the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, NV. With the victory, Holt claims the WBO Junior Welterweight title.
For Holt, it was redemption from their first encounter when both fighters squared off in Torres’ native Colombia, 10 months prior. It was a back and forth affair inside the ring, where there were allegations of fans interfering in the fight, from grabbing Holt’s legs to a thrown beer can hitting him in the head.
The controversial bout was stopped in the 11th round as referee Gino Rodriguez ruled that Holt was being pummeled against the ropes, something that Holt strongly disputed.
This time around, within the first 15 seconds of the opening and only round of the fight, Torres dropped Holt with a wild right cross that caught him flush on the chin. After getting up, Holt was knocked down again by an accumulation of punches.
