It was a night of ups and downs at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 28th. The main event saw Manny Pacquiao (47-3-2, 36 KOs) challenge David Diaz (34-2-1, 17 KOs) for the WBC lightweight title. It was Pacquiao’s first fight at 135 pounds and everyone wondered if Manny could be effective at lightweight.
Pacquiao came out like a “Filipino Hurricane” and swarmed Diaz with punches in bunches. Diaz, who was much slower than his opponent, had problems landing any significant punches and was forced to play defense throughout the fight. Manny was able to use his superior speed to land combinations before taking a step back to avoid any incoming blows. With cuts on the side of his head, the bridge of the nose and over his right eye, it was an uphill battle for David all night long.
Pacquiao battered the champion from pillar to post and by the 8th round, Diaz was all but finished. Still, David tried to fight his heart out, always looking to land body shots and use his high guard to block Manny’s punches. Unfortunately for him, this was Pacquiao’s night as he butchered the Chicago native in the 9th round before a crushing left hand that Diaz never saw coming landed square on the chin and sent him face first onto the canvas. There would be no count as the fight was immediately stopped giving Diaz only his second professional loss and the WBC lightweight title to Manny Pacquiao – becoming the first Asian fighter to hold a world title in a fourth weight class........

Margarito (36-5, 26 KOs) fue facturado por su promotora Top Rank, como el welter más temido en el planeta, pero muy pocos lo creían. Permaneció como un misterio, no haciéndose ningún favor en su actuación contra Joshua Clottey y su derrota contra Paul Williams.
Irónicamente, fue la pérdida contra Williams que convenció a su promotor Top Rank mejor promover al mexicano. Sus dos combates desde entonces han sucedido en las carteleras de Miguel Cotto, construyendo aún más la anticipación para su contienda el 26 de Julio. Ambos combates tuvieron como resultado explosivas actuaciones, inclusive un nocaut destructivo a Kermit Cintron éste Abril pasado.
Mientras tanto, la espera permitió que Cotto (32-0, 26 KOs) hiciera la transición de welter reconocido a súper estrella del box.
